Minister Sheila Malcolmson Visits Guru Nanak Food Bank Branch at Surrey

Surrey, 25 July- Today, Minister Sheila Malcolmson, accompanied by MLA Jinny Sims and all Board of Members from Guru Nanak Food Bank (GNFB), graced the Surrey branch with her presence. During her visit, Minister Malcolmson was given a detailed briefing by the Operational Head and Secretary of GNFB, Neeraj Walia, about the commendable work and high standards upheld by the food bank.

The discussions delved into the roots of Guru Nanak Food Bank and its journey from inception to its current status as a leading community-based organization. Neeraj Walia shared insights on the range of services provided by the food bank, which have been touching the lives of many in the community.

Minister Malcolmson expressed her admiration for the dedicated efforts put forth by Guru Nanak Food Bank in serving the community. She inquired about the financial sustainability of the food bank, given the extensive expenses associated with its operations. Neeraj Walia emphasized that Guru Nanak Food Bank has been able to sustain itself with the tremendous support received from the community. The food bank operates solely through community contributions and serves the people from two locations, seven days a week.

During the visit, Neeraj Walia also took the opportunity to present a request to Minister Malcolmson regarding the pending matter of attaining full access membership with Food Bank BC. Currently, Food Bank BC only offers non-member funding opportunities when they become available, which poses challenges for GNFB. The membership with Food Bank BC would open up avenues for networking, educational programs, and various other benefits, which would greatly enhance Guru Nanak Food Bank’s capabilities to serve the community.

Minister Malcolmson assured Neeraj Walia that she will personally look into the matter and promised to lend her support to the request. MLA Jinny Sims wholeheartedly supported the application during the meeting, affirming the significance of Guru Nanak Food Bank’s role in the community. Additionally, GNFB received support for their application from Minister Harry Bains, MP Sukh Dhaliwal, MP John Aldag and MP Randeep Sarai further demonstrating the collective commitment towards the cause.

With the prospective membership of Food Bank BC, Guru Nanak Food Bank anticipates receiving increased aid, which will enable them to amplify their positive impact on the community. The benefits from networking and educational programs will further enhance the food bank’s ability to address the growing needs of those they serve.

Guru Nanak Food Bank remains dedicated to its mission of serving the community and looks forward to continuing its noble efforts with newfound support and resources.
