David Eby and Surrey NDP Candidates Address Key Community Issues at Round Table Event

Surrey, BC – October 09 – David Eby, alongside Surrey NDP candidates, discussed their action plan to tackle pressing issues facing Surrey and the South Asian community at a recent round table event.

 Addressing housing affordability, Eby emphasized the NDP’s commitment to cracking down on speculators, creating 300,000 new homes for the middle class, ending blind bidding, and providing a $1,000 tax rebate to ease household budgets. “We’re working to make homes affordable for all communities,” said Eby. On healthcare, Eby acknowledged long wait times in hospitals and emergency rooms, underscoring efforts to hire more doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers.

In response to concerns about healthcare accessibility and long wait times, Eby emphasized the NDP’s commitment to improving the healthcare system by hiring more doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers. He announced the establishment of new medical school in SFU to train the next generation of medical professionals and improve cancer care. Addressing youth issues, he outlined plans to expand Foundry centers and ensure every public school has a mental health counselor, reinforcing support systems to engage youth and distract them from drugs. Eby also discussed the need for involuntary care options for individuals struggling with addiction. He stated, “We recognize that some individuals require different approaches to treatment, which is why we are exploring involuntary care for certain groups to ensure they receive the help they need.

“Addressing questions about discrimination, Eby condemned recent derogatory remarks from a BC Conservative spokesperson Anthony Kooch, affirming BC’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity. He criticized BC Conservatives’ silence on candidates with discriminatory views and reinforced NDP’s stance against racism with initiatives like the Racist Incident Hotline.

Eby also shared plans to curb gang violence, enhance police support, expand recreational facilities, and provide free off-peak transit for seniors. He concluded by emphasizing the NDP’s commitment to job training and expanding transit for seniors to improve mobility in Surrey and beyond.
