SURREY- Mayoral Candidate for Surrey Now Troy Van Vliet, called for a full, independent investigation into a recent City of Surrey land purchase that raises serious concerns regarding the stewardship of public funds at City Hall.
The transaction in question involves the property located at 8293 King George Boulevard (since updated to 8291 King George Blvd & 8288 135A St). The 0.86-acre parcel was reportedly acquired by the City of Surrey in August 2025 for a staggering $10.9 million. This equates to an unprecedented valuation of over $12.6 million per acre—a figure entirely unaligned with current market comparables for similar properties.
”Residents are rightfully questioning why the City allocated such a massive sum for such a small parcel of land,” said Troy Van Vliet. “We need to know whether this acquisition, along with other recent transactions, was executed at fair market value or at inflated prices far exceeding real estate assessments.”
Serious public allegations are currently circulating that politically connected individuals and associates of the Mayor and Council may be disproportionately benefiting from these transactions, with property acquisitions allegedly occurring at two to three times their assessed value. Van Vliet maintains that these allegations are too severe to be ignored, dismissed, or handled behind closed doors.
”This is not City Hall’s money—it is the public’s money,” Van Vliet added. “Every single dollar allegedly overpaid is a dollar stripped away from schools, policing, roads, affordable housing, parks, recreation, or keeping taxes manageable for working families. Surrey deserves clean government, responsible spending, and elected officials who treat taxpayer dollars with absolute respect.”
The SurreyNow campaign calls for the immediate, unconditional release of all documentation linked to this transaction, alongside a formal independent review of all recent municipal land deals.
